Description & Objectives:

Wound bed preparation is a tailored approach to managing chronic and hard-to-heal wounds by removing barriers like necrotic tissue, debris, heavy bioburden, and biofilm. BEAMS stands for various debridement techniques: Biosurgical, Enzymatic, Autolytic, Mechanical, and Surgical.

By evaluating these options, clinicians can select the best method to address wound barriers based on the wound's characteristics and the patient's needs while preserving healthy tissue. This requires monitoring and adjusting BEAMS to foster an optimal healing environment.

Upon completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

List the 5 debridement methods associated with BEAMS.
Name the slowest selective debridement method and one of the fastest non-selective options.
State 3 debridement methods that can be performed at the bedside (within the scope of practice).
